Dear educators,

Happy fall! I hope you’ve been settling into a new routine with the new school year!

In this newsletter, we put our “Spotlight on Solar.” MGE is growing our use of cost-effective solar generation as we work toward net-zero carbon electricity. At our newest solar array, Tyto Solar in Fitchburg, we’re managing the ground cover sustainably—with the help of sheep from a nearby farmIt’s part of the broader practice known as agrivoltaics or dual-use solar.

Dane County Youth Climate Conference

We hope you will spread the word about the fourth annual Dane County Youth Climate Conference at Madison College on Saturday, Nov. 16. MGE will be one of 20 community organizations at the conference. High school and college students lead the conference for their peers, setting the agenda and moderating and speaking throughout the day. For more information, visit the Youth Climate Conference website.

KidWind Challenge

Look for MGE at the Wisconsin KidWind Challenge, hosted by the Wisconsin Energy Institute on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus in March 2025. Third through 12th grade student teams design and build small-scale wind turbines and solar structures to measure power output and present them to expert judges.

Wisconsin’s K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP)

From our partners at KEEP, we learn about their most popular educational kit, the Solar Tilt Kit. The kit is a great way for students and educators to develop an understanding of how solar panels can be used to generate electricity and how a variety of factors can impact the amount of electricity generated.

Switch to Safety

We highlight our Switch to Safety program, where MGE's safety education consultant simulates potentially dangerous indoor and outdoor electric safety scenarios through an energized tabletop city called Hazard Hamlet. To schedule the Switch to Safety program for your classroom, contact Flossie Baryenbruch at bflossie1@gmail.com or (608) 277-9323.

Our team looks forward to engaging with you this upcoming school year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Contact us by email at eduservices@mge.com to request resources or to share how MGE can better serve your energy education needs.

Spotlight on Solar: Local Sheep Graze at MGE’s Tyto Solar

MGE's newest solar array, Tyto Solar, is using sheep for "solar grazing," maintaining ground cover in a sustainable way.
