MGE is targeting net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. We're doing everything we can today to lower carbon emissions as quickly and as cost-effectively as we can. Growing our use of carbon-free energy generation is a key strategy in achieving this goal.
Renewable energy will continue to play a critical role in our strategy for reducing carbon emissions, as reflected in our clean energy investments; however, it is only one of many tools, including battery storage, that will be used.
MGE owns generation units and purchases electricity through contracts and from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) energy market. Current sources of MGE's generation portfolio include:
Midcontinent Independent System Operator
MGE is a member of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). MISO is a not-for-profit organization that is responsible for the coordination and delivery of reliable electric power across all or parts of 15 states, including Wisconsin.
When deciding which power sources to use, MISO considers:
- Which power resources are available or operating in the region,
- Regional reliability needs, and
- Overall costs.
Net-Zero Carbon Electricity
Together, we can reach our goal of a cleaner, more sustainable future.
