Reading Event Highlights Black History and Energy Literacy

De’Kendrea Stamps reads to a group of students with their backs turned to the camera.
De’Kendrea Stamps, MGE Customer Engagement and Community Services Manager, reads to students at Leopold Elementary to celebrate "Read Your Heart Out."

MGE visited schools across the Madison area to celebrate “Read Your Heart Out” during Black History Month. “Read Your Heart Out” recognizes National African American Parent Involvement Day, which the Madison Metropolitan School District began celebrating in 2004 at Midvale Elementary.

“Read Your Heart Out” embraces the seven principles of Kwanzaa, which include:

  • Umoja (unity)
  • Kujichagulia (self-determination)
  • Ujima (collective work and responsibility)
  • Ujamaa (cooperative economics)
  • Nia (purpose)
  • Kuumba (creativity)
  • Imani (faith)

MGE Customer Engagement and Community Services Manager De’Kendrea Stamps read to second through fifth grade students at several schools across the Madison area in February. She engages students in energy literacy by selecting books exploring energy concepts, such as forms of energy, renewable energy and the power that lives inside each of us.

“Read Your Heart Out” is not only fun for all but also serves to foster a love of reading, empowering students to explore the world through books. If you are looking for books to include in your student’s energy library, consider the following:

  • Energy Makes Things Happen by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
  • Power Up by Seth Fishman
  • Sammie and Sally Go on An EV Adventure by Selika Josiah Talbott and JQ Ramos
  • Energy for Everyone by JP Warren
  • Discovering Energy by Eduard Altarriba
