Renewable options for your electric and gas services

If you're looking to advance sustainable energy in your business operations, MGE can help. Our new Green Power Tomorrow (GPT) renewable natural gas (RNG) option, known as GPT RNG, is an easy way for MGE customers to offset their emissions from their use of natural gas. MGE is the first utility in the state to offer this type of RNG option to customers.

How GPT RNG works

Under the GPT RNG option, customers pay an incremental charge to participate, selecting either a set number of therms each month to offset through GPT RNG or a percentage of their monthly usage. Renewable Thermal Certificates (RTCs) are purchased by MGE on the customer's behalf to offset the emissions associated with the customer's use of natural gas.

RNG is a processed biogas. It is carbon-neutral because it comes from the natural breakdown of organic sources instead of from fossil fuels.

This new program option is another way in which MGE is building upon its commitment to providing safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. MGE has set a goal to achieve net-zero methane emissions from its natural gas distribution system by 2035.

GPT 100 for renewable electricity

MGE's long-standing GPT program offers customers a flexible, affordable option to power their business with clean electricity. GPT is served by MGE renewable energy resources, both wind farms and solar arrays.

MGE electric customers who enroll in GPT pay a penny more per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and choose their level of participation, either a percentage of their electricity use, a set dollar amount per month or our new GPT 100 option.

GPT 100 is an option for customers who want to participate in GPT for 100% of their electricity use. GPT 100 automatically tailors a customer's percentage participation in GPT to account for the percentage of MGE's energy portfolio that is served by renewable resources. For example, a participant in GPT 100 would have 25% of their usage served by renewable resources included in MGE's standard resource portfolio and 75% of their usage subject to the $0.01/kWh incremental energy charge under the GPT program. As MGE's use of renewable resources increases, participating customers will see their percentage participation decrease over time.

The kWh allocated to GPT include the environmental benefits, or Renewable Energy Certificates, which are retired on behalf of participating customers.
