Shared Solar

Shared Solar is an optional community solar program for MGE electric customers who wish to reduce their environmental footprint while helping us meet our carbon reduction goals. Participants pay an up-front fee and then a monthly premium to subscribe to shares of solar energy from a local MGE solar array.

Shared Solar participants may choose to receive carbon-free energy for up to 50% of their annual electricity consumption and lock in their energy rate for the term of the agreement.

MGE will soon be launching a new community solar program called Shared Solar - Strix! Participants will have the option to subscribe to receive energy from MGE's Strix Solar array in Fitchburg. Join our mailing list to get notified when program enrollment opens.

There is no obligation to purchase shares by joining the list. Shares will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that terms and cost will differ from MGE's original Shared Solar program.

What is community solar from MGE?

MGE's community solar program offers eligible electric customers the opportunity to purchase shares of locally generated solar energy. Participants share the output of the solar installation. Community solar customers don't receive the solar energy directly—their participation supports the growth of renewable energy supplied to our grid, helping to create a more sustainable energy supply for all MGE electric customers.

Participants do not install or maintain their own systems, and no special equipment is required to participate. Plus, you can take your shares with you if you move within the MGE service territory!

How to participate

Participants will pay a one-time, up-front fee to reserve a portion of the electricity produced at a local MGE solar array. Then, they'll pay a monthly per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) charge for their chosen subscription amount (for up to 50% of their annual electricity consumption). The monthly per-kWh charge will remain fixed, even if you move within MGE's electric service territory, for the life of the agreement.

Help us reach net-zero carbon electricity

MGE continues to grow our use of carbon-free generation to meet our community's energy needs while working to achieve our carbon reduction goals. By 2050, we expect to deliver net-zero carbon electricity.

Participation in programs like Shared Solar is a powerful way to help us go further faster to reach this goal!
